Questions & answers

Common questions

Can't see your question? Call us on 01924 400216. Advice is always free.

What income counts towards the threshold?

Your combined gross income from self-employment and property, before expenses. Wages from a job and pensions don't count.

When are the quarterly updates due?

For standard quarters, by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. Your tax return is still due by 31 January.

Do I have to pay tax every quarter?

No. Quarterly updates are reports, not payments. You still pay your tax in January and July as now.

Can I keep using spreadsheets?

Yes, if they're linked to HMRC with bridging software. We'll tell you whether that suits you or whether dedicated software would be easier.
